Tackling the critical shortage of affordable housing

 

The lack of affordable housing in the region has led to a severe shortfall in personal care workers, calculated to be more than 30 full time staff in 2021, rising to a shortfall of more than 50 by 2031.

We think this poses risks to the health and well-being of the aging community – one of the oldest communities in Western Australia.

​

Late in 2023 we collaborated with 8 other community organisations to appeal to the Cook Government to tackle the critical shortage of affordable housing for essential aged care workers in our town.

​

Our partners in the submission included: Shire of Denmark, Denmark Community Resource Centre, Denmark Community Foundation, Denmark Chamber of Commerce, as well as aged care providers, Amaroo@Home, ACareWA, Baptistcare At Home and Silverchain.

 

Our 2024-25 Pre-Budget Submissions seeks $5.1m in funding to build 12 affordable rental homes specifically for aged care workers.

This investment is not just about building houses; it's about sustaining our community's health and ensuring our elderly receive the care they deserve.

​

We are grateful for the support of so many concerned organisations, and hope that this will make a difference to the Government’s review of the request.
