The situation

In Australia, over 55s represent 29% of the population but in Denmark, they make up 44.3%!

Government population projections predict that by 2031, the 65 years and over age group will represent almost one third (32.58%) of the entire population.

This is a significant rise from 2021 when it was 27.6%.

Localising the State Seniors Strategy

We are working with the Denmark Community Resource Centre to develop an Age-Friendly Denmark project that aims to improve outcomes for our seniors.

Our immediate focus is to help seniors thrive based on 3 of the identified Pillars of Change.

  1. Safe and Age-Friendly Communities

  2. Thriving physically, mentally, and spiritually

  3. Staying Connected and Engaged

Our goal is to understand what community members aged 55 and over feel they need to thrive.

This will involve conversations about access to nutritious food, affordable housing, good health, and other aspects of wellbeing.

Data collection and workshops will inform this work, so let us know if you would like to be involved.

Getting older in Denmark

The population of Denmark is ageing, experiencing both a growth in the number of seniors, and a shift in the peak age profile.

The largest group of citizens in Denmark are those aged 60-64.

However, in the last 10 years there has been more than a 51% increase in the number of elderly aged 80 and over.

What we will do to achieve our goals

  • Map existing support systems and identify solutions to the gaps.

  • Actively connect seniors to existing support structures and services.

  • Develop strategies and partnerships to help close the gaps identified by seniors as impacting their ability to thrive.

  • Develop a tool with which to measure the wellbeing of seniors in an ongoing way. This will allow us to evaluate whether our actions are having a positive impact.
