Launch of our Thriving Seniors Community Brief

Our recently launched Thriving Seniors Community Brief shares data and the priorities selected through industry consultation with the aged care sector in Denmark.

There are some thought provoking questions suggested for each of us to consider. We hope you will join us for this conversation.

A Community Information Workshop will be held on  the 22nd May.

Meeting

Inaugural Chairs Forum

This month we achieved a milestone in governance support for Denmark Futures, with the inaugural Chairs Forum, and  Board Matters for Board Members meetings for Denmark NFPs.

We hope these will become a regular forum for sharing, and caring about each other and our community.

If you would like to participate in these quarterly forums, please email us.

Collaboration with other community organisations

In early December, we collaborated with eight other community organisations to appeal to the Cook Government to tackle the critical shortage of affordable housing for essential aged care workers in our town.

Housing for essential workers

When our application to the Department of Communities for resident housing was declined in September, our focus turned towards housing for essential workers.

Workforce recruitment and retention in our town is currently limited by a lack of affordable rental housing. This situation will get worse over time, because there are no market led solutions that are viable in the current economic or government policy environment.

On 17th January Denmark Futures and the Shire of Denmark met with the office of the Minister for Regional Development to discuss our business case for using the property at 31 on the Terrace for affordable housing to rent. We requested financial support to progress the acquisition and conversion of this property into worker accommodation. Our request was unsuccessful.

We would like to thank Jane Kelsbie MLA for organising this opportunity to allow us to ‘make our case’, and the Shire of Denmark for taking the lead in the meeting.

The Shire’s support is regarded by decision-makers as a vital part of the solution.
